A Parametric Approach for Smaller and Better Encodings of Cardinality Constraints

چکیده
Adequate encodings for high-level constraints are a key ingredient for the application of SAT technology. In particular, cardinality constraints state that at most (at least, or exactly) k out of n propositional variables can be true. They are crucial in many applications. Although sophisticated encodings for cardinality constraints exist, it is well known that for small n and k straightforward encodings without auxiliary variables sometimes behave better, and that the choice of the right trade-off between minimizing either the number of variables or the number of clauses is highly applicationdependent. Here we build upon previous work on Cardinality Networks to get the best of several worlds: we develop an arc-consistent encoding that, by recursively decomposing the constraint into smaller ones, allows one to decide which encoding to apply to each sub-constraint. This process minimizes a function λ · num vars+ num clauses, being λ a parameter that can be tuned by the user. Our careful experimental evaluation shows that (e.g., for λ = 5) this new technique produces much smaller encodings in variables and clauses, and indeed strongly improves SAT solvers’ performance.

Smaller Selection Networks for Cardinality Constraints Encoding
Selection comparator networks have been studied for many years. Recently, they have been successfully applied to encode cardinality constraints for SAT-solvers. To decrease the size of generated formula there is a need for constructions of selection networks that can be efficiently generated and produce networks of small sizes for the practical range of their two parameters: n – the number of i...
متن کاملEncoding Linear Constraints with Implication Chains to CNF
Linear constraints are the most common constraints occurring in combinatorial problems. For some problems which combine linear constraints with highly combinatorial constraints, the best solving method is translation to SAT. Translation of a single linear constraint to SAT is a well studied problem, particularly for cardinality and pseudoBoolean constraints. In this paper we describe how we can...
متن کاملEfficient Encodings of Conditional Cardinality Constraints
In the encoding of many real-world problems to propositional satisfiability, the cardinality constraint is a recurrent constraint that needs to be managed effectively. Several efficient encodings have been proposed while missing that such a constraint can be involved in a more general propositional formulation. To avoid combinatorial explosion, Tseitin principle usually used to translate such g...
متن کاملOn the CNF encoding of cardinality constraints and beyond
In this report, we propose a quick survey of the currently known techniques for encoding a Boolean cardinality constraint into a cnf formula, and we discuss about the relevance of these encodings. We also propose models to facilitate analysis and design of cnf encodings for Boolean constraints.
متن کاملTowards Robust CNF Encodings of Cardinality Constraints
Motivated by the performance improvements made to SAT solvers in recent years, a number of different encodings of constraints into SAT have been proposed. Concrete examples are the different SAT encodings for ≤ 1 (x1, . . . , xn) constraints. The most widely used encoding is known as the pairwise encoding, which is quadratic in the number of variables in the constraint. Alternative encodings ar...
